Theatre Scene Cape Town
What a great privilege it was on Wednesday to attend the opening night of Candice van Litsenborgh’s first ever one woman show, Understudy Blues, and what a show it was! It had everything, laughter, comedy, tears, that "ah" moment, and of course this was all presented by Candice with a voice that will knock your socks off.
She skilfully and with great wit introduces you to the turmoil and triumph that is the life of an understudy. She had every theatre critic and fan in stitches as she calmly and sometime with an appropriate dash of crazy tried to convince the director that the understudy must go on! ... maybe, sometime, if he wished, perhaps, kindly so requested... in future?
In this Canned Rice Production presented show, Candice’s star quality truly shines, with the skilful guidance of director Richard Wright-Firth and musical director Drew Rienstra. You can see that the songs in this cabaret comedy musical were carefully and cleverly selected (maybe even with a soft personal touch).
You will be doing yourself a theatre injustice if you don’t get to the gorgeous victorian Galloway Theatre with its grand phantom-like chandeliers and treat yourself to the theatre gem that is Understudy Blues before end of run on 31 May. Booking online or by messaging Sharon on 0827728867.
