Luring the audience in with beautiful vocals and a lovely rendition of ‘That’s Life’ (which will make any Frank Sinatra fan’s heart sing along), Cat Simoni and Lucy Tops are set to leave an impression with the latest Follow Spot Productions offering, CAT & LUCY.
CAT & LUCY (or Lucy & Cat… as per their fun banter-battle) is a joy to experience if you are an appreciator of great skill, beautiful voices, and iconic songs. It has the character of a cabaret that would fit perfectly in the sultry setting of a cigar and wine bar (perhaps with a touch of whiskey too for those smokey notes).
Here it’s not about a story being woven together through song. It’s rather a celebration of two great talents with loads of personality giving expression to their personal preference in performance style and song. If you are looking for that golden thread that gives the show an element of cohesion, it’s perhaps best found in the hinted to theme of the turbulence of life, as is hauntingly reflected in their Elton John medley which includes ‘I’m still standing’, ‘Rocketman’, and ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’.
This being the first time that Simoni and Tops share a stage, it is a theatrical indulgence to see two exquisite songstresses perform with great depth in tone and measured control, both in the softer moments and the impressive stadium-like showcase of power as they belt out anthems. A true standout moment of the show is when Tops and Simoni reveal their vocal genius by taking the the Tones & I hit, ‘Dance Monkey’, and giving it a diva makeover that will leave you utterly amazed —they really know how to make a song their own.
In CAT & LUCY, you’ll even find a touch of classical finesse with the enthusiastic exploration of Mendelsohn and his maestro tribe’s work which will see you hoppin' and a-boppin' all the way through with Rockin’ Robin.
This show is all sequins and sass with piano forte flair. It may even see you rediscover Bette Midler in the cheekiest of ways.
