SCENE IT: A legend on stage at Theatre on the Bay

Barbara Loots

Marion Holm is absolutely phenomenal in her one woman show Marion Holm vir Beginners at Theatre on the Bay. In great Afrikaans comedy fashion she takes to the stage to introduce herself and her “no this really truly did happen!” tales of life, loss and laughter by way of relatable stories and flatmate Nathaniel “missing link” inspired revelations that will have you in stiches.

She shares anecdotes about her family and friends in such an honest and bare-all narative manner that her natural talent shines all the brighter. If you ever doubted that the unpretentious and very humble Marion has established herself as a true legend of Afrikaans theatre, you only need to see this show to lay all doubts to rest. From the moment you sit down you feel comfortable, relaxed and absolutely entertained.

The fact that Marion and I share some hood roots when it comes to her Kraaifontein KFC stories and local Northern Suburbs accents, made the show all the more enjoyable and special for me. But even if you have not driven through the streets of our town, her storytelling will sketch technicolour images of florescently lit limousines with Kurt Darren soundtracks that will have you giggling uncontrollably.

I laughed, I cried, but most of all I LOVED Marion Holm in this show. From Zanzibar to the Oranje River and now Camps Bay, she is an absolute treat on stage!

This amazing evening of seeing Marion Holm own the Theatre on the Bay stage was beautifully paired with a magnificent three course meal at the theatre restaurant, Side Dish Bistro, complete with Phantom-esque chandeliers. For only R195 you can have a choice of starters, mains and desserts that will have your taste buds doing a dance-of-joy as the perfect opening act to an amazing show.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to treat yourself to the Kosie House of Theatre presented Marion Holm vir Beginners at Theatre on the Bay before the run ends 22 August 2015. Tickets, ranging from R100 to R170, are on sale at Computicket.
