PRESS: CALL ME A FOOL… to step into love and never to fall

Leah Mari

CALL ME A FOOL is a one-act musical by Leah Mari with a romantic-comedic tone, set in modern day South Africa. It has a short run, 16 to 21 December 2022 at Studio 3, LAMTA at Theatre on the Bay.

CALL ME A FOOL is about falling in and out of love, the road in between, and the parts of ourselves we neglect along the way.

The show features two female characters: Amy (Léa Blerk) and Zara (Sunny Yoon) who are young, twenty-somethings, trying to find their feet fresh out of university. They navigate their romantic relationship as they search to find their space in the working world.

Writer, composer, lyricist and director, Leah Mari, is a musical theatre student at the Luitingh Alexander Musical Theatre Academy (LAMTA) in Cape Town. She was one of two winners of the national ‘Cabaret and Beyond' songwriting festival which led to the first ever production of CALL ME A FOOL being produced and staged in association with the Centre for Creative Arts, in Qhaberha and Durban in 2022.

Leah believes that like all successful musical theatre products, continuous revisions, edits and workshops are par for the course, and so she is excited to bring her new version of CALL ME A FOOL onto the LAMTA studio floor, a space where she herself has spent many hours as a student honing her skills.

Leah is also directing and accompanying this second run, which she believes is an improved telling of the lives of Amy and Zara:

“We are very excited to present this studio version of a local story with international themes, which we hope speaks to the lives of modern young adults.”

The production will run from December 16th until December 21st at 5pm in Studio 3 at LAMTA, Theatre On The Bay.
