The month of May marks a huge milestone for Jungle Theatre Company as we are celebrating 20 years since it was established as an NPO on 31 May 2004. Over the years Jungle Theatre has performed in different schools, libraries, and festivals in the Western, Eastern & Northern Cape.
In 2019 under the creative leadership of Joce Engelbrecht and Ntombifuthi Mkhasibe Jungle Theatre Company organised the first African Folktales Festival which grew to become JTC’s biggest event which is now hosted twice a year in June and September.
This year’s African Folktales Festival forms part of our 20th birthday celebrations with a double bill performance of Hoerikwaggo which is one of JTC’s oldest shows and ending the festival with Captain Kwanda’s Fanplastic Adventures which is JTC’s newest show as a symbolism of JTC’s past and present journey.
The festival will take place on Saturday, 15 June at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg. The shows are most suitable for children between the ages of 4 – 12 years.
The programme is as follows:

Hoerikwaggo is a fun; interactive, educational play focusing on the importance of the Table Mountain range as an example of biodiversity. The play concentrates on the natural environment with particular focus on indigenous flora, the diversity of animal life and broaches: fire prevention; baboon management; protection of species; fynbos and biodiversity awareness; the importance of alien clearing and cultural heritage. Hoerikwaggo is a trilingual production that draws on local archetypes and characters and uses comedy; song; dance and audience interaction to provide engaging education.
Captain Kwanda's Fanplastic Adventures is a new show developed in partnership with Captain Fanplastics. It tells the story of Captain Kwanda and his turtle friend, Fin. They sail around the Cape coast and beyond in search of sunken treasures from old shipwrecks. Suddenly a strange storm brews when the Ocean Spirit, Lwandle, pays them a visit and gives Kwanda the power to speak to all ocean creatures. They are sent on a quest to help sea animals affected by plastic pollution. Captain Kwanda is rewarded with a different treasure and earns a new name – Captain Fanplastic.
Tickets for the both shows cost R80 per person and may be booked on Quicket.
