FOR THE RECORD is a showcase of 3 developing works: A photographic exhibition, BUYELEKHAYA; a play reading, The Salt Lesson, and a performance art piece AMAHLAZO: Monstering the Queer Body. These works have been photographed, written, created and performed by the talented Magnet Theatre FirstRand FirstJob interns as part of the final project of their internship year.
The showcase will have 2 showings only on the 14th and 15th June 2024 at Magnet Theatre. The internet is buzzing with excitement and audiences are eager to see these thought-provoking dynamic pieces! Magnet Theatre is proud to support new voices and ground-breaking talent.
BUYELEKHAYA, conceptualised and photographed by Phakamani Waka, explores “Home” as a safe haven and a comfort zone, involving a deep emotional connection and a sense of rootedness that significantly influences our well-being and mental health. The exhibition explores home as a place and home as self.
The Salt Lesson, written by Sibuyiselo Dywili and read live by Jennie Reznek, Gavin Werner, Themba Stewart and Sipho Kalako, The Salt Lesson explores the politics of race, belief, fatherhood in a post-apartheid South Africa, through the lens of a dementia patient and a forgotten son. What does it mean to be forgotten?
AMAHLAZO: Monstering the Queer Body concept and direction by Smamkele Mentyisi, performed by Lukhanyiso Skhosana and Smamkele Mentyisi, with sound and visuals by Lukhanyiso Skhosana, Simamkele Sitwebile and Smamkele Mentyisi. It explores how the world employs monster(ing) to dehumanise queer identities in order to vindicate violence against the LGBTQI+ community.
FOR THE RECORD will be performed on the 14th and 15th June 2024 at Magnet Theatre: Cnr Lower Main & St Michael’s Roads in Observatory.
