The Cape Town G & S Society presents ‘The Yeomen of the Guard’, a Gilbert and Sullivan Opera at Artscape Opera House from 10 to 17 August 2024.
The Cape Town G & S Society, is a community theatre driven organisation, that brings to stage both Gilbert & Sullivan comic operas and West End / Broadway musicals and in so gives volunteers an opportunity to live out their theatre dreams with passion.
The Cape Town G & S Society proudly presents their latest offering, 'The Yeomen of the Guard’, in collaboration with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
Step back into the 16th Century and experience the grandeur of the Tower of London with Gilbert and Sullivan's most dramatic opera, 'The Yeomen of the Guard'.
It is Gilbert & Sullivan’s most dramatic opera which has a believable story line with well-drawn characters. Intrigue, comedy and a “tragic” ending make up the dramatic plot. This captivating and humorous masterpiece promises to transport you to a world of historical intrigue, where every character is meticulously crafted, and every twist of the plot keeps you on the edge of your seat.
This opera contains Sullivan’s most profound and beautiful music. The score perfectly complements the dramatic narrative, enhancing every emotional beat with melodies that linger long after the final note. Being in English, it is also easy to understand the story-line, allowing you to fully engage with the characters' journeys and the unfolding drama. This production stands as a pinnacle of English Romantic Opera, showcasing the very best of Gilbert and Sullivan's collaborative genius.

The Yeomen of the Guard, first opened on October 3, 1888, at the Savoy Theatre in hr UK and was so well received it ran for a remarkable 423 performances.
This latest staging by the Cape Town G & S Society promises an unforgettable evening of entertainment, with a total duration of 160 minutes and a 20-minute interval to reflect on the first act's brilliance before diving back into the drama.
The cast includes Regina Malan, Sian Atterbury, Philippa van Ryneveld, Rozelle Wilken, Wilhelm Lichtenberg, Stephan Le Roux, Robert Hill, Nick Plummer, David Bolton, Henco Hunter, Nkosinathi Rodrigues and Lyle Wilson, who will take to the stage to entertain audiences with this classic. The production is staged under direction of Teddy Davies and Kyla Thorburn.
