PRESS: Call for applications for Women’s Month Festival

Christine Skinner

Your voice, your stage! The Drama Factory and F Creations are proud to announce the inaugural running of their Women’s Month Festival. The festival will be a hive of activity, including theatre shows, comedy and live music – all of which will be presented by women and telling stories about women. It will run 18-21 August 2022 at The Drama Factory in Strand.

Both F Creations and The Drama Factory have been involved in producing plays for festivals around South Africa for several years. We felt that it was time to give back and provide a space for artists to put on their work.

The Drama Factory has been a receiving space that encourages new work and new talent since its inception. The theatre has also operated as a producing house, bringing several productions to life. The next logical step in producing for the theatre was to create a festival that nurtures local talents and continues to create jobs in the arts sector.

It is the ethos of F Creations to encourage local work and to partner with artists who have a desire to put on work that is inspired by their worlds. Teaming up with other women has also always been a priority for F Creations founder and producer, Faeron Wheeler. A Women’s Month festival has been a concept that Wheeler wanted to produce for several years now.

The enforced downtime of the pandemic and lockdowns has provided the gap to further explore the notion of the festival and what it means for the South African arts landscape. There is a strong need for independent, small theatres to provide spaces for independent, small production companies to stage their work. Without these spaces, theatre in South Africa will suffer.

The festival is currently in the planning phase and a call for artist applications is now open. In honour of National Women’s Month, the team is looking for acts that tell stories about women. All production teams should also be largely made up of women. This festival is all about helping to amplify the voices of women working in the performing arts. Applications to perform at the festival must be done through the form and they close on 10 July 2022. The Drama Factory and F Creations look forward to welcoming new productions to the festival and the theatre. August is going to be a good month for women working in the performing arts!
