Jon Keevy’s A GIRL CALLED OWL is an unflinching coming-of-age story that spotlights innocence lost, creativity stifled, and love misunderstood.

It is the early 90s, and ten year old Olivia moves to a small town in the Overberg with her policeman father. Her quiet curiosity attracts a mischievous friend: Kay, the girl with the scar, who gives her the nickname “Owl.” As Owl and Kay grow into teenagers, they trade playground scraps for taking risks with real world consequences. Owl dreams about getting out and away from their problems, but inevitably nothing works out quite as she planned. Her impulse to follow rebel Kay leads to uncharted waters and events that could irrecoverably alter the life-course of a promising girl like Olivia.

Gert Griessel writes for the Vrystaat Arts Festival Vrypen: “Tales of growing up and lost innocence is a well-worn path, but always makes for compelling theatre when executed with as much intelligence and tenderness as in A Girl Called Owl.”

Larissa Crafford-Lazarus delivers a powerhouse solo performance, switching seamlessly between Owl, Kay, and a host of other vivid characters. Acclaimed critic Robyn Sassen describes her performance: “She’s bold, she’s feisty, she’s convincing and she takes ownership of the work with a potency and a sense of vulnerability that will bring tears to your throat as you watch her.”
