Scene It: Dynamo’s ‘Seeing is Believing’, magic with heart

May 19, 2018

What turns close-up and street magic into a theatrical experience? An honest and clear narrative that doesn’t need to trick the audience into investing in the journey of the performer. That is what sets Dynamo apart from so many other magicians —his magic has heart.

From mind-boggling levitation to intimate close-up magic he has captured the imagination of the world, making it his mission to bring magic to places that have never experienced the wonder and amazement of the art of illusion.

Sharing his own personal Steven Frayne journey of solitude, family connections, and purpose-discovered, Seeing is Believing draws the show's clear, well executed narrative through every act, movement, and emotion of Dynamo’s magic. His style sees one man’s presence fill a stage, and captivate an audience, as he brings his honest sense of magic to a grand arena in the most relatable way.

With some tricks displaying the jaw-dropping Dynamo-effect, to others requiring no smoke and mirrors at all, he is unapologetically unfeigned. Even with amazing soundscapes, captivating animation, and exquisite projections providing context to his magic, he remains the approachable dreamer from Bradford, West Yorkshire in everything he does; reminding his audience that it is important to know where you come from, as well as what and who motivates you, if you are to turn the impossible into the probable.

In his delivery, Dynamo skillfully balances comedy and authenticity. He entertains with dry-humoured banter, without sounding rehearsed, and offers audiences unpretentious magic and the absence of ego —a refreshing approach to this art form. You walk out knowing that small moments of amazement can lead to big magical revelations.

As a professional magician his technique and the execution of his tricks are unquestionably amazing, but part of the appeal of his magic is also the energy and openness with which he sincerely interacts with his audience. So, don’t be a smug, cynical, know-it-all —there is one in every audience; don't be that person. If you enter the Grand West Grand Area, with an open heart and a willingness to be amazed, Dynamo will give you an unforgettable experience with Seeing is Believing.

In the end, Seeing is Believing is a nostalgic walk down magic-memory-lane, as presented by an exceptional magician who has overcome many obstacles —including bullying, which he subtly addresses with soft spoken reminders of ‘don’t fight’— by becoming his own superhero on a journey from imagination to realisation. He is the everyman’s magician. He may be able to walk on water, but none of that has gone to his head. He’s an absolute delight to watch on stage. You can’t but adore this hoodie wearing performer who doesn’t indulge those who only want to see the flashy side of magic. He simply gives you pure illusion and enchantment. What more could you ask for?!
