Spotlight: Greet 2017 the Theatre Fun Way!

December 6, 2016

Whether you feel like laughing with Alan, dreaming with Annie, singing with Dani, getting Fortyfied with Nik, having a jol with Alistair, a farce with the departed A. Christie, or even if you just wish to shout Au Revoir or say Kanala, there is definitely a #lovetheatre New Year’s Eve show that will be just right for you!

On 31 December 2016, Annie the Musical will definitely gift you with a night to remember. The show starts at 9pm and the audience is invited to join the cast after the show in the gorgeous Chandelier Foyer of the Artscape Theatre to ring in 2017 with a glass of wine and a smackerel. What better way to make you believe in the promise of a beautiful new year than this favourite musical with its eternal anthem of optimism, ‘Tomorrow’. Tickets are between R250 and R600 and available at Computicket.

Then you can also go wave goodbye to the old and hello to the new at the very glamorous Theatre on the Bay with everyone’s favourite red leotard wearing, charming jester of jokes, Alan Committie, as he dishes out just the right amount of giggles, and even some more for 2017 luck, in Laughing Matters. Now that is bound to be fun! Go get your funny bone tickled at 9:30pm on the eve, at R160 to R220 a ticket with bookings at Computicket. Want to make the evening even more fabulous? Why not pair it with a lovely dinner at the in house theatre bistro. Dinner packages also available at Computicket at R805 per person.

Nik Rabinowitz is at his punniest in Fortyfied at the Baxter Theatre, where he invites you to join him in figuring out whether he is having a midlife crisis and whether not knowing is a crisis in itself. As 2016 seemed to be a year in crisis with itself, let your hair down and let Nik figure it all out for you as you laugh away your cares. Nik kicks off the fun at 10:15pm and you can book your tickets at R255 per person at Computicket.

Sometimes we should also just pause and say thank you, and what better way to do that than with a musical, a David Kramer presented District Six – Kanala musical at the Fugard Theatre to be exact! Go let your hair down, let your feet find the beat and your heart embrace the spirit of the multi-cultural community that once called District Six home. This fantastic tribute show starts at 9pm and tickets are between R120 and R220 at Computicket. Don’t forget to pop up to the Fugard Theatre’s rooftop bar for the best New Year’s Eve view!

Another show where you will find an incredible vibe, is the Alistair Izobel presented Kaapse Jol at the Baxter Theatre, as it celebrates the dynamic cosmopolitan essence that is the pulse, heartbeat and unique rhythm of the Mother City. The high energy fun starts at 9pm on New Year’s Eve and tickets are R215 per person at Computicket.

Or maybe you are in the mood for a bit of a cabaret vibe? Then you best get booking to see the sensational Dani & the Lion at Alexander Upstairs, where after (or even before) you can sample some of the best cocktails in town at the uber elegant Alexander Bar. Dani and Leo have put together a special set for you, an armoury of gutsy, sad and blisteringly funny blues songs and stories. They are ready to entertain you at 9pm that evening, but they have an extra special treat already. If you book and pay your tickets online at www.alexanderbar.co.za for New Year’s Eve, you only pay R250 instead of the standard R350 per person. So jump to it!

Then there is the very trendy, steam punk cabaret way of saying farewell to 2016 with Au Revoir at Kalk Bay Theatre. At R210 per person, be prepared to be treated to a mesmerising show, as six multi-talented performers bring you a cirque-comedy dance extravaganza. Book online at www.kalkbaytheatre.co.za to experience this carnival smorgasbord for adults.

So many amazing entertainment options, but there is even more! Don’t forget about the delightful mystery farce Murdering Agatha Christie at the intimate Rosebank Theatre. It is a great holiday season show that will leave you wondering ‘Who Dunnit?’ with a good dose of laughter in between too, as you wait in the new year. Show starts at 10pm at a cost of R125 per ticket via Webtickets.

And don't you dare forget about the now legendary New Year's Eve parties at the Cape Town Comedy Club in the V&A Waterfront! Your ticket priced at R350 per person includes a show featuring 5 comedians, a champagne cocktail on arrival, countdown to 2017 and after party with DJ Godfrey. What more could you want?! Book via Computicket and go relax, laugh and just have fun in a safe, upmarket environment.

So put on your highest heels or your coolest bow tie, and see in the New Year in style on 31 December 2016, the theatre way. A happy 2017 filled with fun and laughter awaits!
