CAPE DANCE COMPANY PRESENTS SACREDSPACE
ARTSCAPE THEATRE, 3 – 10 DECEMBER 2016
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR: DEBBIE TURNER
The classical-contemporary Cape Dance Company (CDC), under the artistic direction of Debbie Turner, returns to Cape Town’s Artscape Theatre in December 2016 after highly successful seasons at the Klein Karoo Arts Festival, the National Arts Festival (Main Programme) and the Joburg Theatre.
This highly anticipated season entitled sacredspace is principally sponsored by the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) and most notably features a newly commissioned work by the South African born choreographer, Andrea Schermoly. Featured artists in this season include Ipeleng Merafe, Celeste Botha, Marlin Zoutman, Carmen Lotz, Thamsanqa Njoko, Nathan Bartman, Olivia Parfitt, Ciara Baldwin, Gemma Trehearn, Given Mkhize and an excellent supporting cast. Lighting design throughout the production is by the award-winning Wilhelm Disbergen.
Ms. Schermoly trained at the National School of the Arts in South Africa and then at top schools such as the Rambert Ballet and Contemporary School and The Royal Ballet School in London, where she completed her dance education. As a professional ballet dancer, she has been a member of Boston Ballet and Nederlandse Dans Teater (NDT1 and NDT 2), working with choreographers Jiri Kylian, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, Hans van Manen and many others. As a choreographer she has created works for Boston Ballet 2, the Joffrey Concert Group and Kansas City Ballet to name a few.
Due to the tremendous success throughout South Africa of A Thousand Shepherds, choreographed by the Spanish/UK choreographer, Jose Agudo, the work will be reprised by popular demand once again this year. Starring Nathan Bartman, it is a deeply moving piece and a searing exploration of humanity that has received much acclaim on various SA stages.
The award winning Enemy Behind the Gates returns as well, choreographed by Christopher L Huggins (USA), a spectacular piece that was re-staged last year to incorporate a double cast of 50, the largest complement of dancers ever used in this ballet. To accommodate this, the double volume theatre stage will be opened up to showcase the work that leaves audiences breathless with a display of lightning-fast choreography that explodes charged emotion delivered by breath-taking athleticism and power by the company.
sacredspace is also supported by the National Arts Council, Fruit & Veg City and Business & Arts South Africa.
The season runs at the Artscape Theatre on 3 to 10 December at 8pm with a matinee on 10 December at 2:30pm. Tickets cost from R130 to R200 via 0214217695 or Computicket. Advance booking is recommended.
