Everyone who has ever watched the movie Centre Stage will know how the transformation from classical Giselle type performances, to kick-ass, jive-in-your-seat type modern ballets for the people, can make something beautiful uber cool too!
Sean Bovim and Bovim Ballet is South Africa’s answer to that Centre Stage ah-ha moment, making ballet that rocks… n rolls… and leaves you wanting more! So, grab your leather jacket, jump on your motorbike and get yourself to the Baxter, because the cool kids are back in town and they are ready to party ballet ‘bad boy’ style!
The fact that their Private Presley – a Salute to the King is back at the Baxter Theatre for another run until 28 November 2015, due to popular demand, and had the people cheering, gasping and whistling for the dancers on stage all through-out the show (not just at the jubilant curtain call) at opening night, is all the evidence you need that they are kicking-butt and taking names in the ballet world.
The Bovim Ballet guys and gals truly take your breath away as they dance you through the story of Elvis Presley, the King. Here are our and some of our theatre friends’ reactions to the explosion of colour, talent, and even comedy on stage:
“Forget Elvis! The music has allowed for some of the most amazing ballet moves I’ve seen in a long time! But of course, the music is Elvis, so double whammy! Who knew the King of Rock and Roll is so perfectly suited for ballet!? Speechless!”
- Charmains van der Merwe
“Private Presley – what a pleasure to sit and experience the extraordinary life of the King of Rock n Roll. I had no idea he was drafted into the US Army for 18 months, as a regular Private. The ballet was exhilarating. I was blown away by some ground breaking ballet moves… When’s the next show please?!”
- Fatima Razzak
“Private Presley, you were always on my mid since I first laid eyes on you a few years ago … and I am very, very pleased to say that I once again can’t help falling in love with you. Thank you, thank you very much to Bovim Ballet and Baxter Theatre for bringing this incredible show back to the Mother City :) Cape Town, if it’s rock n roll ballet you’re after, get your tickets for this hip swaying, head bobbing, sexy production!”
- Fazielah Williams
“My #DontWalkDANCE theatre loving heart delighted in every move the exquisite Bovim Ballet Company dancers brought to the stage… and even though the whole troupe is breathtakingly brilliant in every move they make, I must confess that last night a (roller)skater boy stole my ballet-loving heart. JV Mattei your character truly turned a sequence of beautiful dances into a fun storyline too… you are the comedic glue that brought this show together. Well done to you and the rest of the cast on yet another great Bovim experience!”
- Barbara Loots
Oh and apart from leaving you breathless (and wanting to rush out and buy colour coded pointe shoes asap), what Bovim Ballet also does is break the mould and crush the myth that ballet is not really for men. The guys in this company (Henk Opperman, Sven-Eric Müller, Devon Marshbank and JV Mattei to name but a few) are athletes, amazing performers and their on-stage energy is the type of electric presence that turns ordinary men into legends!
So what more do you need to get yourself to Computicket and buy your tickets to see Private Presley – a Salute to the King at the Baxter Theatre before run ends 28 November 2015? Leave your ‘Suspicious Minds’ at home, go have ‘A Little Less Conversation’ and just ‘Surrender’ to the power of storytelling through dance. We promise, it will leave you ‘All Shook Up’!
Thank you Bovim Ballet and The Colab Network for bringing this amazing show back to Cape Town!
