The Waterfront Theatre Company in association with Artscape invites local audiences to ‘take heart’ this winter with their revival of the classic Gilbert and Sullivan comedy The Pirates of Penzance at the Artscape Theatre – June 3rd to June 6th.
Reminding us of the need ‘to find peace of mind’ and sharing the optimistic attitude that ‘fair days will shine’ The Pirates of Penzance is guaranteed to lift even the heaviest of spirits as our winter days become shorter, colder and darker!
Offering a stark contrast to their more recent musical productions (Legally Blonde – the Musical and Footloose), The Pirates of Penzance affords students of the prestigious Waterfront Theatre College the opportunity to work outside their contemporary comfort zones and push the limits in terms of style and scale; sustaining the college’s reputation as the market leader in Musical Theatre training: developing the full extent of talent and always aiming ‘Higher’!
Thwarted by a hard-of hearing nursery maid, young Frederick is bound to a band of pirates – but today he is 21 and his indenture has come to an end. Bound by duty he determines to rid the seas of ruffians...once he has found himself a bride that is!
Threatened by the enemy within (and thanks to the revenge of the jilted hard-of-hearing nursery maid), the band of pirates discover a means to save their sticky end and in so doing put poor Frederick in a rather delicate position!
Directed by Paul Griffiths – The Pirates of Penzance features a large ensemble cast with leading roles being shared by Megan Spencer and Jocelyn Roskilly as the demure but determined Mabel Stanley, Dirk Joubert and Dean De Klerk as Frederick – the slave to duty!
Ryan Arnold as the Pirate King, Jules Stols and Thembilihle Benenengu as Ruth the beleaguered nursery maid and Nathan Kruger as the show stopping Major General Stanley.
The production also features a live (!) chamber orchestra under the musical direction of Jaco Griessel.
With set design by Deon Bischoff and costumes by Delia Sainsbury – The Pirates of Penzance offers a visual treat to even the most discerning eye and choreographers William Jones and Shona Brabant are sure to keep your feet tapping along to this sparkling score – described at the time as being one of the most accomplished compositions of the age!
The Pirates of Penzance offers a limited season from Wednesday 3rd June – Saturday 6th June. Shows start at 7.30pm in the Artscape Theatre and tickets cost R 120.
