The Fugard Theatre's Playland, written by Athol Fugard, sees Albert Pretorius win in the Best Lead Actor category!
At a glittering ceremony at the Artscape Opera House last night, Albert Pretorius won the coveted award for Best Lead Actor in a Play for Playland, Athol Fugard's moving drama presented in Afrikaans (with English surtitles) and produced by Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre in District Six as part of the Suidoosterfees in January last year.
Set on New Years’s Eve of 1989, it tells the story of Gideon le Roux (Pretorius), a former army corporal, who goes to a dubious amusement park to say good riddance to the worst year of his life. Drinking to forget and searching for a true human connection, he meets night watchman Marthinus Zoeloe (Mbulelo Grootboom). The two men, both from very different backgrounds and with personalities at opposite poles, start to interact. Inside a strained conversation unpicked by the protagonist Gideon, they reveal themselves through a combination of resistance and release, through shared moments: some mundane, some magical and many deeply meaningful.
Louis Viljoen's play The Pervert Laura saw Emily Child win as Best Lead Actress in a Play. The production will be presented at the Fugard Theatre in May 2015. The Pervert Laura is a dark psycho drama written and directed by Louis Viljoen, himself an award winning playwright and director, who scooped two awards at the 50th Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards last night: for Best New South African Script for The Kingmakers and the Rosalie van der Gucht Award for Best New Director, for his work on both The Kingmakers and The Pervert Laura.
The Pervert Laura will run at The Fugard Studio Theatre from 6 to 23 May 2015. Tickets will be available through The Fugard Theatre Box Office on 021 461 4554 or computicket.com. Advance booking is recommended for this limited season.
