Press: The Playroom, Winner of the Market Theatre’s Zwakala Festival 2013

February 11, 2015

Winner of the Market Theatre’s Zwakala Festival in 2013 where it went on to have a 2 week run at the Barney Simon Studio, The Playroom, written and directed by Thando Mzembe, was first performed at the Zabalaza Festival in 2013.

Three mentally disturbed people are placed in an institution, and in their playroom they go through experiences that gradually reveal the truth about themselves and their psychological dislocation. Meanwhile, the male nurse who tends to the patients also has his skeletons lurking in the closet.  Innovative and bold in performance style, The Playroom veers from the funny to the chilling and really questions issues of leadership, positions of power within the health system and ultimately who is healing who.

The Playroom, performed in English and isiXhosa will run from the 3rd – 7th March at 7pm.  Tickets are R50 and bookings can be made on 021 447 3683 or artsadmin@mweb.co.za. Online bookings can be made at www.theatrearts.co.za. Performances take place at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective, Methodist Church Hall, cnr Milton Road and Wesley Street, Observatory.

This performance is followed by the award winning production Salt, directed by Wynne Bredenkamp (10th – 15th March at 7pm) which also explores issues around mental health, putting the 2 productions in conversation with each other.

The Playroom is written and directed by Thandolwethu Mzembe, and performed by Aphiwe Livi, Babalwa Makwetu, Xola Mntanywa, Luleka Ngcenge and Thandolwethu Mzembe.
